Google Classroom "Detachments"

As we moved into our seat-of-the-pants implantation of GSuite for Education, it quickly became apparent that we had absolutely no point of reference for troubleshooting the myriad of issues that cropped up.

Taking a page from--it looks like everyone who uses GSuite for Education's book--I started checking Google Education forums for some of the answers. In this particular instance, we had issues with students losing Attachments--hence the "Detachments" in the title-- but also having issues accessing assignments. I pulled and tweaked some of the data from here:

Hopefully this will give others a quicker view of some of the suggestions.

  1. Check to make sure there are no known issues with Google Core Services, particularly Drive: https://www.google.com/appsstatus#hl=en&v=status

  2. Instruct the student to open the assignment to generate their files. Did this generate the file?

  3. Have the student log out of Google and log back in. Is the attachment there?

  4. Have the student try to login to GSuite with a different browser...did that work?

  5. Try to have the student login to Google on a different computer. Do they have the same problem? If no, the issue is likely machine-specific, try #5 on the student’s machine.

  6. Clear the cache in the Browser. (choose instructions for the appropriate browser)

  7. Chrome- https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/2392709?hl=en&visit_id=1-636395334788497343-2562548924&rd=1

  8. Firefox- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-clear-firefox-cache?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=How+to+clear+the+cache

  9. IE- https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17438/windows-internet-explorer-view-delete-browsing-history

  10. Edge-- https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/10607/microsoft-edge-view-delete-browser-history

  11. As a workaround: Email the students the attachments so the students can download them into classroom. Although this negates the purpose of classroom, it does get the student the assignment right away so the issue can be addressed later.

  12. As a Best Practice: Use Google Docs, etc as attachments because they are meant to integrate most easily into Google Classroom. (see explanation below)

Explanation for #1--Student copies of the files are not created until they click on the assignment. Students may not really be opening the assignment and when the teachers look in their classroom they see the message No attachment. Verify the students opened the assignment and still did not receive their copy.

Explanation for #6--There is a difference attaching a Google Doc versus a Word file. A teacher can attach both files to Classroom (and there will be different logos) but Google Docs are meant to work smoothly with Google Classroom. This is why they open easily from Classroom. If you were to attach a Word file, students will have to download the word file first and then can work on it. I suggest you take a look at this article: https://support.google.com/edu/classroom/answer/6020260?hl=en&vid=1-635754164472254293-15320435156182723198, which will walk you through how to maximize your use of Google Docs with Google Classroom.

Resources for you to access and search for issues:

Google Classroom:

If none of those options work, this is the information it would be helpful to gather so you can escalate the issue with Google Support and/or your Technical Support Department:

  • Classroom URL

  • Assignment URL

  • To what kind of class item do you attached the file? (Material of the class resource page also called about page, announcement, assignment)

  • What kind of attachment is it? (Docs, Sheets, Slides, non-Google Editors file)

  • What is the size of the attachment?

  • How much time passed between the attachment submission as part of the class item and that students reported that they can't see the attachment?

  • When the students where added to the class, before or after the attachment submission

  • Please include screen captures of both teacher and student views.

  • To what kind of class item did the teacher attach the file? (Material of the class resource page also called about page, announcement, assignment)

  • What kind of attachment is it? (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Microsoft, non-Google Editors file)

  • What is the size of the attachment?

  • How much time passed between the attachment submission as part of the class item and that students reported that they can't see the attachment?

  • When were the students added to the class, before or after the attachment submission?

  • Please include screen captures of both teacher and student views.
